Spring is here, which means it’s time for a spot of Spring cleaning…

Well, possibly! With the kids off school and the sun occasionally popping out to say hello it’s easy to get distracted by more exciting things to do. Nevertheless, as allergy season kicks in it’s worth giving the house a once over to keep the environment fresh and healthy.

The traditional of Spring cleaning has been around for years and years. Some believe the tradition may have come from Jewish culture, cleaning the house of unleavened bread in preparation for the passover. Others suggest it originated in China, as a way to create goodwill moving into the Chinese New Year. One thing is for certain, as they sun starts to stay out for longer, we get a much better view of the dirt and dust that so quickly builds up around the home. Spring is definitely a good time to deal with it. Here’s how to do it properly.

Starting from the top and working down is generally the best tactic.

Whipping out the duster and getting rid of all those pesky cobwebs is a good place to start. Cobwebs tend to build up higher in the home, in the corners of ceilings, so you might need a little step ladder to reach them. Whilst you’re up there it’s a good time to dust off lampshades and the door frames too.

Of course waving a duster around is likely to kick up a fair bit of dust, so be mindful that you don’t breathe it all in, open a window if possible. After the first sweep it’s time to give the shelves and cupboards a dust off too. It can be a bit fiddly but emptying the shelves and dusting the things on them is really the only way to do this properly.

This point is probably the best time check doors, frames and walls for any marks they might have picked up over the winter. Get out a tiny bit of paint and a touch up brush and fix anything you can find. It might seem like a bit of a hassle now, but you’ll be so glad you did it afterwards and this really is the ideal time for it.

Finally it’s time to tackle the big one – cleaning the carpet.

First off give it a good vacuuming. Remember, carpets don’t just collect dust on their surface, it gets trodden right in too, so make sure you’re using a decent vacuum cleaner. Something with some sort of floor agitation is ideal. After a good clean you might find you notice marks on the carpet a little more, things that were once hidden under dust may now be more obvious.

When you’re talking carpet cleaning, it really might be best to get a professional in to do the hard work for you.
